Lap Siding

Friday saw the lap siding go up on the original block of the house. I have the house broken up into 4 blocks: the original house, the boys 2 story block, the new addition block, and the new front porch block. Each block will have its own color and siding type. I plan to tie it all together with a common trim color.

New Front Windows

Thursday (12/6) saw a big change to the front of the house. We removed the old, very large, and non-opening windows with smaller, opening, and more stylish windows. It provides us with more wall space inside for furnishings, but more importantly, it gives us more privacy and intimacy. I am really happy with the change.

In goes the new triple window.

This is the second big window gone.
A room with too much view!

Insulation

The roof took over 3 weeks to finish. Some of the pieces were ordered wrong and had to be reordered. We have had a lot of rain as well, and a steep metal roof becomes a dangerous slide when wet. Anyway, it is on now.

Last Friday (11/30), the addition was insulated. This is great! It is still drafty in the house, but it it is a whole lot better than it was.

Upstairs.

Master bathroom windows.

Monday (12/3) saw no progress. On Tuesday (12/4), the electrician came to do a few small additions and some minor changes. Jim and Ralph did some minor interior details. The most exciting thing to happen was that we broke open the wall where the access to the new addition will be.

Wednesday (12/5) was spent on the new front entry. The new small square window was added and the porch framing was sheathed. You can really see the form on the front better now.

A Roof! A Roof! ...well, almost.

Finally! Our metal roof made it today! They started with the addition roof. It was done by lunch time.

Let's get it on!

Give Me Some Heat!

Today saw the heating guys on the job for the first day. Wish we had heat in the house now! With the addition open to the existing house and doors open all day, it is quite chilly in the house...low 50's. The metal ductwork got partially installed today. It should all be in by the end of tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Jim and Ralph kept doing bits of framing here and there. Near the end of the day, they started to frame around the new ducts.

The addition will have it's own heating and cooling system.

Most of the ductwork is hidden by the soffit.

The ducts all come here to where the new furnace will be.

New Master Bathroom

The space within the existing house got framed for the new master bathroom today. There will be a "wet" space with the w.c. and shower and a "dry" space with the sink, storage, and makeup vanity. The walls between the wet and dry will be sandblasted glass.

It is hard to take a good photo at this point, because you are simply too close to walls.

Looking at the wall between dry and wet. A small glass panel will fit in each of the three spaces high up near the ceiling.

You can see the "windows" up high. There is my drawing...right of that is the vanity space and to the left will be the door to the "wet" area.

Popcorn!

My next task is to scape off the "popcorn" ceiling.

Well, on Sunday, I did get all that "popcorn" off. My arm and shoulder suffered! It was a huge mess. We put up plastic sheets on the walls and floor to catch the falling debris. Goggles and mask were a must. It all came off in the end.

Start Framing the Room...

I took these on Saturday. The w.c. is a little bit less private!

A Big Breakthough.

After my TH night of tearing out the old room, Jim and Ralph were back for more. First, the new wall between the living room and the new master bathroom was built. The doorway from the addition was broken open...and in rushed the cold air from outside. At least it is up in the 40's outside. It is pretty cold inside the house now. Now our bed is just inside the front door. Our dressers are in the dining area. Fun stuff!

Ralph enjoys demo. Here he is taking off the old lath.

Gone - The Back Room

On TH evening, I tore out the carpet, removed all the carpet staples (that took forever), took out the trim pieces, and unscrewed all the electrical face plates. Tomorrow we break though!

What's Good for the Front...is Good for the Back.

The back porch was not so great, so off it came. A new one soon followed. The new roof has a little less slope to it. There is a nice new beam...and matching posts will be up shortly.

New Entry Part 2

The sun came out, and there was our new entry structure basking in the warmth.

New Entry Part 1

The day started out dark, damp, and gloomy. The old flat roof was torn off above the front entry making way for a new, larger gabled roof. The day got brighter as the roof got taller.

Porch Off!

I got to spend all day tearing off the old porch and roof. It was hard work but good stress relief.

All Windows Are In.

Here is a shot after all the windows were put in.
