Raise the Roof!

Not really anything to raise, but the roof did get built TH 9/27/07. It was a beautiful day, but we knew the rain was coming....and it came in a big way TH night! Good timing with the roof going on!

Roof Blocking and Venting

Tuesday was another glorious weather day! It was small things today. Blocking was installed between the roof joists to add stability. Meanwhile, Ralph was drilling holes and adding wire mesh to blocking pieces that will allow ventilation above the insulation and also keep the birds out. The wall sheathing was completed too. The guys have another job on Wednesday while we wait for our roof sheathing to arrive. Thursday should see the roof take more shape.

Up With the Roof

Monday brought fantastic weather! The last step in the framing began today...the roof structure. We are having a "shed" type roof that will allow for the windows to be high up on the East wall. The roof joists are wood I-beams. They are cut to length and then 2x4's are added to the ends to create the overhang. This is a tedious job. With the roof joists in place, you get a good idea of what the upper floor volume will feel like.

The Skin Goes On

By the end of the day Friday, the addition was starting to get closed in. Quite a bit of the exterior sheathing was up. You can now get a better sense of how each space will feel inside. We also lucky out with some beautiful weather...even if the mornings start out really cold.

Up With the Second Floor!

Wednesday started cold and wet but ended nice. All four of the exterior walls were erected. There are no interior walls, so it basically got done. Big Jim and Ralphie Boy put in another great day's work. They also did some more detail work on the main level...blocking, soffits, etc...

Stairway to...

Tuesday brought dry weather and sunny skies. The upper floor got finished, and then the staircase was built. We had a great platform in which to view the beautiful sunset.

More of the Main Floor

Monday brought rain and cooler temps. The interior walls of the main floor with constructed.

More Lower Floor Walls

On Friday, we added interior walls to the lower floor. It went a bit slower than Thursday as we were missing some material and had to make some slight changes to match up to the existing house properly. With the threat of rain this weekend, we had to put up a tarp for a temporary roof.

I am constantly re-designing! I think it is a curse, but things do seem to improve.

Walls Start Going Up!

After a bit of time without much progress, we basically framed the first floor today. I finished dealing with the insulation while Ralph and Jim started framing. When I was done, I joined them in getting the walls up.

It is really exciting to see the walls!
